In 2025, several countries adjusted their visa policies, making travel simpler and more accessible for Russian tourists. Moves in Asia and the Middle East have notably eased travel restrictions for Russians, with some countries adopting full visa-free entry and others streamlining visa procedures.
China continues its visa-free programme for Russian citizens, introduced in September, which has already boosted tourism between the two nations. Oman and Myanmar have followed suit by waiving visa requirements, allowing Russians to visit for tourism without bureaucratic hurdles. Jordan will also join this group: starting 13 December 2025, a mutual visa abolition agreement with Russia will allow citizens to stay visa-free for up to 30 days per visit. This initiative is part of the efforts to strengthen tourism and humanitarian relations and has received strong bilateral support.
Malaysia still requires visas for Russians but is negotiating to establish a visa-free arrangement. Both countries are discussing ways to simplify entry procedures to enhance accessibility. Japan has reopened visa centres, easing the visa application process for Russians, and is considering further steps to relax the visa regime, signalling progress toward reviving tourism between the two nations.
As outbound travel opportunities expand, Russia is also enhancing its entry system for foreign visitors. Beginning 11 February 2025, the number of border points accepting a unified e-visa was expanded. E-visas are now valid not only at major airports but also at seaports, road, and rail crossings. The e-visa is applied for online, takes several days to process, and allows stays of up to 16 days. Furthermore, discussions are underway to extend the validity of the e-visa and to expand its use for both business and tourist travel.
As a result, the range of visa-free destinations available to Russian tourists has greatly expanded: Oman, Myanmar, and Jordan are already open, while Japan and Malaysia are preparing to relax their restrictions. Meanwhile, Russia is streamlining entry procedures for foreigners. These steps are designed to boost tourism, deepen international cooperation, and enhance the appeal of both Russia and its partner countries for travellers.
